Sneak Up
12 x 12 Limited Edition Giclee Print on Canvas ~ Sneak Up. Framed size is 14x14. Number 20/100.

The sneak up dance is a story of how a warrior would go ahead of the party to scout out the area for the enemy or game. Starting with a rolling drum beat the dancers attempt to sneak up on their target, the song then goes into a fast steady beat that stops instantly. The dancers must stop on the beat or retreat to try again.

Curtis Albert is a 5 year old learning the ways of the elders. His native roots are Northern Cree, born in Canada and he was given the name ‘Ka Pee Kwa Num’ which means Running Buffalo. He is a Northern Traditional Dancer and has been honored with many awards. His father says, “It is a great honor that the Great Spirit has given the gift of dance to my son for it was the same for me when I was his age.”

Little Drummers (Artist Proof)
10.5 x 14 Artist Proof Edition Giclee Print on Paper ~ Little Drummers.

These two little girls are actually from the Bora Tribe in Iquitos, Peru. The tribe is about 3 hours up the Amazon River from the small area known as Iquitos. This tribe is still very much hunter gatherers. They live off the land and build their homes and clothes out of the barks of the tress. This little one is holding onto a suspended hallow log that they use as a ceremonial drum. The chief of the tribe was so taken by my portfolio (we had an interpreter with us) that he gave me his full regalia he wore for the ceremony that day. Unbelievable. I was there for 2 weeks.

Gerik is a 10 year old Omaha, Northern Traditional Dancer. His Grandfather brought him into the arena at a very young age. When his Grandfather placed the feathers on his head he told him, “take care of your feathers and they will always take care of you.” Gerik told me that war paint should be given to you but he had a dream and because it came from within himself that he needs to ware it.

“I dance because when I started dancing I was told to dance proudly for my family and the Omaha people and all the living things. When I dance I feel blessed by God and hope those who watch me dance get a good blessing”.

Ka Pee Kwa Num (Running Buffalo)
15 x 19 Giclee Print on Paper ~ Ka Pee Kwa Num (Running Buffalo).

Ka Pee Kwa Num or Running Buffalo, is the same little boy I painted in ‘Sneak Up’. His father use to call me for every pow wow Curtis was attending. I loved watching this little boy dance. He could dance like no other. The beat of the drum sent him on his path and it was mesmerizing. His father told me that he chose yellow for his face paint because of the sunshine Curtis brings to their life, the black represents the bear clan and is also for protection. Many dancers ware black around their eyes and mouths to protect them from evil entering their bodies. Keep in mind that the arena has been blessed and becomes a sacred ground. The dancers are praying to the spirit world and feel vulnerable out on the dance floor so they ware and paint on their protection.
