When I was in High school (freshman) I was showing an interest in painting. John Hawk my father thought it wise as part of my education to take me to Washington DC. And view the art within the Smithsonian Inst. I spent hours beneath the earth( the galleries were mostly underground) looking at incredible art from around the world . While there~ with an invitation , John and I attended a powwow in Virginia. We arrived and met his freind Quonan and stayed the night in a large Tipi with others among them the beautiful Screaming Eagle and her father Red Bird.

At Dawn Screaming Eagle Stretched in the Morning Sun (the Morning Dancer) and put on her Feather regalia.. While a brave crowd gathered in the early chill Sreaming Eagle began to dance to the pounding of her fathers drum ,joined there by her brother Iron Horse. She swooped and rose and swooped again ,spreading out her dark eagle wings (SCREAMING EAGLE).

Red Shawl Dancer
8 X 10 or 12 X 18 Limited Edition Giclee Print ~ At Dawn Screaming Eagle Stretched in the Morning Sun (the Morning Dancer) and put on her Feather regalia.. While a brave crowd gathered in the early chill Sreaming Eagle began to dance to the pounding of her fathers drum ,joined there by her brother Iron Horse. She swooped and rose and swooped again ,spreading out her dark eagle wings (SCREAMING EAGLE). She then gently removed the Eagle wings and put a Red Shawl around her shoulders. Again the drum pounded and now she kicked up her heals and pranced as if she were being chased through the desert flowers (RED SHAWL) quickly turning and flashing her beautiful smile to invisible freinds in persuit. After the dance Screaming Eagle shared with me the story of the Red Shawl (apache) and how young warriors who had died were reincarnated as the hummingbirds, still All in love with the Apache princess they chase her ~ She also told me of another Dancer who danced with the Red Shawl and helped the warriors return as hummingbirds (THE HUMMINGBIRDMAKER). While Screaming Eagle told of thes stories to me Red Bird ,her Father had approache my Dad and tod him a was an Artist and must keep painting,he then approached me and grabbed my hands in his huge ones and told me to paint”the Red Road ....” Keep painting he told me. Two weeks later Red Bird passed away. His words became like a drum beat in my head and ever since that little moment in time, in that place~ far from home I strived to make my art . Note : The very first painting of RED SHAWL was actually stolen from a Santa Fe Gallery and I have never seen it since .
